It also doesn’t do enough with James Spader’s Ultron, a Marvel villain problem that had become all too familiar to MCU fans by that point.
Compared to the streamlined approach of the first Avengers, Age of Ultron tries to juggle too many moving parts and set up too many future MCU movies.
But this sequel is also less than the sum of its parts. Avengers: Age of UltronĪvengers: Age of Ultron features some of the coolest moments in MCU history, from the epic Hulkbuster battle to Vision lifting Mjolnir to Captain America almost doing the same. Still, in the end Malekith and his Dark Elf minions couldn't save Thor: The Dark World from mediocrity. It's an entertaining set piece that's worth watching again. The final battle in London is a blast to watch, as is watching Thor's hammer Mjolnir follow its master from planet to planet as Thor is being tossed in and out of different worlds. Thor and Loki's relationship is always compelling, especially after the death of their mother, Frigga. What happened to her?)Įven with those negatives, there are still some pretty great moments in Dark World that keep it from falling flat on its face. (Nobody even mentions the beautiful and courageous Lady Sif anymore. There's also the problem with the characters who seem important at the time, but don't end up being necessary down the road. Director Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones), struggled to find that balance in Dark World, making the film feel too serious at times. It took Chris Hemsworth a few movies to really find his stride as the God of Thunder, with director Taika Waititi perfectly balancing the dramatic with the funny in Ragnarok.

While not a bad movie per se, Thor: The Dark World pales in comparison to its successor, Thor: Ragnarok. Iron Man 2 may be a crucial building block toward movies like The Avengers, but it struggles to balance that role with the need to tell a coherent, cohesive story of its own. What exactly was the deal with Whiplash’s bird, anyway?Īs the third entry in the fledgling MCU, a lot of Iron Man 2’s problems boil down to the fact that Marvel Studios was still figuring out its formula. But somehow those elements didn’t really come together. and Whiplash into the mix, and delving deeper into the Stark family’s troubled history. This sequel sounds great on paper, bringing back director Jon Favreau and star Robert Downey, Jr., adding War Machine, Black Widow, S.H.I.E.L.D. Iron Man 2 proved that bigger doesn’t automatically equal better. And Norton’s dry, understated performance doesn’t distinguish the Banner character in any memorable way.Īnd yet, The Incredible Hulk does have its moments, focusing more on the HULK SMASH part of Banner’s life than that previous film had done, while also laying the groundwork for the (recast with Mark Ruffalo) version of the Other Guy who would become such a key part of the Avengers films a few years later. Perhaps the problem is that the film feels too familiar - Bruce Banner on the run is not exactly an exciting or fresh take on the concept. Behind the scenes struggles between star Edward Norton and MCU boss Kevin Feige couldn’t have helped matters, nor could the fact that a solo Hulk movie had just been released five years earlier.
